In 1976 he graduated from the Riga Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Automation of Technological Processes and Production.

The entire work activity of Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin is connected with the development of the oil and gas complex of Western Siberia. After graduating from the institute, he was assigned as an engineer at Ivdelsky Linear production management association "Tyumentransgaz", and then in September 1979, Vazhenin was transferred to the Ortyagun compressor station of the association "Surguttransgaz". He started as an instrumentation mechanic, and then transferred to the position of senior engineer; in 1986, he was appointed head of the instrumentation and automation service of the second compressor station. Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin worked on the highway for almost ten years. During this time, the young, proactive, competent engineer learned the intricacies of the gas industry profession and in 1988 was hired as deputy head of the Surgut l line production management on production.

A new stage in Yuri Ivanovich’s work biography began in 1991, when he was appointed Deputy General Director for Personnel and Household Services. His competence included a lot of issues: the construction of housing, preschool institutions, treatment and organization of recreation for employees of the Surgtgazprom enterprise, the development of social protection programs and the main provisions of the Collective Agreement. Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin not only coped with the responsibilities assigned to him, but also constantly showed initiative, was always in search, and offered unconventional solutions to emerging problems. Over several years of work, Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin raised the prestige of the position of Deputy General Director for Personnel and Household Services to unprecedented heights. He was the initiator of a promising housing construction program on the mainland, the initiator of many provisions of the collective agreement, which became the basis for many years. Employees of the enterprise apparatus came to him to resolve issues, gas workers came from the highway, from other regions of the country - everyone knew that Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin would listen, help with advice and deeds.

On November 1, 1994, by order of RAO Gazprom, Vazhenin was appointed general director of the subsidiary Surgutgazprom. It should be noted that Yuri Ivanovich began to manage the enterprise not at the best of times. There was a well-known period of non-payments. There was not enough “real” money. Naturally, difficulties arose with paying wages, fulfilling the terms of the Collective Agreement and, more seriously, it was difficult to find money to maintain gas production and transportation facilities in working order. However, the team of the Surgutgazprom enterprise managed not only to survive difficult times, but also to put the Zapadno-Tarkasalinskoye field into operation and to constantly increase processing capacity at the condensate stabilization plant. One can note the enormous popularity of Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin in the team of Surgutgazprom LLC. In the most difficult times, in critical moments, the final word always belonged to General Director Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin.

Since 1996, Yuri Vazhenin has been a deputy of the Duma of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra from the Surgut Okrug. He held the position of Chairman of the Commission on Regulations, Issues of Deputy Activities and Ethics. He was a member of the Commission on Budget, Finance and Economic Policy of the Duma of the Autonomous Okrug.

In 1998, Yuri Ivanovich Vazhenin became a laureate of the RAO Gazprom Prize for his work “Development and implementation of reconstruction of compressor stations with gas pumping units “Coberra-182”. At the end of 2000, he was awarded the “Order of the Holy Blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow.” Yuri Ivanovich - Candidate of Technical Sciences, Honorary Worker of the Gas Industry.

The government of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra delegated Yuri Vazhenin to the Federation Council. Empowered since October 6, 2016. Member of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy.

In just one day, Surgut lost two top managers at once. Against the background of the statement of the head of the city Dmitry Popov resignation message about the resignation of the head of Gazprom Pererabotka Yuri Vazhenin It didn't sound so loud. However, this news for the city could result in no less, or even more serious, consequences than the change of mayor.

The news that management was changing at one of the city’s key enterprises appeared on May 23. As reported website in the company's press service, the contract with the top manager will not be renewed - the honorary gas worker is being sent into retirement.

The news came as a complete surprise to everyone, including, according to rumors, Vazhenin himself. Although, according to some reports, the news of the non-renewal of the contract appeared on May 15, Gazprom Pererabotka employees told Novy Gorod that “nothing foreshadowed trouble,” and on May 23 the entire company, along with the now former general director, plunged into deep sadness.

Another aspect indicating the suddenness of this personnel decision: it is known that quite recently Vazhenin rejected the offer of the district authorities to represent the region in the State Duma, citing the refusal with the intention to focus on the affairs of his native enterprise. As a result, Ugra relied on the former mayor of Surgut Alexandra Sidorova, quickly returning him to big politics, and Vazhenin prepared to work for the benefit of the company further, having before his eyes an obvious example of the inviolability of his positions. Let us recall that in April another Surgut “general” Vladimir Bogdanov extended his powers as head of Surgutneftegaz for another five years.

However, the big Gazprom decided differently. 61-year-old (still more than working age for both a politician and a top manager) Yuri Vazhenin gave up the leadership position to a 43-year-old economist Marat Garayev, who arrived in the city from St. Petersburg, where he once graduated from the University of Economics and Finance. It was in the Northern capital that he began his Gazprom career: since 2002, he held the positions of deputy head of the department of marketing, processing of gas and liquid hydrocarbons, as well as head of the marketing department of industrial products. Since 2014, Marat Garayev worked as first deputy head of the department of marketing, gas and liquid hydrocarbons processing at Gazprom.

The Petersburg registration of the successor plays an almost fatal role in this story. Let us note that rumors have been circulating in the company for a long time that the management of Gazprom Pererabotki, and subsequently the entire enterprise, should soon leave Surgut, moving to the city on the Neva. The new appointment is quite obviously getting on the nerves of the entire team of the company, whose representatives told us that, perhaps, in the near future in Surgut only the condensate stabilization plant named after Gazprom Pererabotka may remain. V.S. Chernomyrdin. In this light, the fate of the new office building erected in Surgut on Lenin Avenue remains unclear: our sources report that recently work on putting into operation the almost completed facility has been suspended, and it has not been specified when it will be resumed.

However, so far all the stories about the future of the enterprise remain in the category of assumptions made against the backdrop of the unexpected resignation of the main manager.

Yuri Vazhenin himself has not yet commented on his retirement. Let us recall that he devoted almost his entire working life to the West Siberian fuel and energy complex: he has been working in Surgut since 1979 - he started as an instrumentation mechanic in the Surguttransgaz association. In 1986, he became the head of the instrumentation and automation service of the second compressor station, and two years later he was hired as deputy head of the Surgut linear production department for production.

Since 1991, in the position of Deputy General Director for Personnel and Life of the Surgutgazprom company, he has been involved in many “non-core” issues - housing construction, preschool institutions, treatment of workers, etc. The experience gained in this field allowed Vazhenin to head the enterprise in the future and make it one of the most socially oriented in the industry: we recall that Yuri Vazhenin became the general director of Surgutgazprom on November 1, 1994 and remained the permanent leader for almost 22 years. The names of the enterprise changed, but the essence remained unchanged.

Vazhenin’s resignation coincided with the resignation of mayor Dmitry Popov. In conversations with correspondents website Some experts from among deputies, entrepreneurs, activists and ordinary citizens transparently hint that the candidacy of the former head of Gazprom Pererabotka probably has every chance in the competition for the place of the next head of the city. However, given Vazhenin’s already expressed reluctance to become a deputy of the State Duma, these certainly attractive assumptions are called into question. We will soon find out how he decides to act taking into account the radically changed conditions.
