“Beloved! Do not shun the fiery temptation sent to you as an adventure that is strange to you,” writes the Apostle Peter, “but as you participate in Christ’s sufferings, rejoice, and at the revelation of His glory you will rejoice and triumph.” And although there is a cleansing power in any suffering, it is still so important that the suffering be precisely “Christ’s.” And if you suffer “as a Christian, then do not be ashamed, but glorify God for such a fate.” “As long as none of you suffers as a murderer, or a thief, or a villain, or as someone who encroaches on someone else’s property.” Such a danger always exists, and especially in troubled times, when everything is confused and you can’t immediately figure out whether you are deceiving the legitimate authorities, or using military stratagem against the enemy.

The Apostle is especially concerned about shepherds. “I beseech your shepherds: “Shepherd the flock of God which is yours, overseeing it not under compulsion, but willingly and pleasing to God, not for vile gain, but out of zeal.” Pastors in the church have always been respected and cared for. But hence the danger for them: to feel like the donkey on which Christ rode. She may well have thought that it was for her sake that clothes were placed under her hooves. Such a “shepherd” only shouts, reproaches, and teaches: “Let us, brothers and sisters, do this and that!” “These, who devour the houses of widows and pray for a long time for show, will receive the most severe condemnation.” And in case of persecution, he is the first to fall. And behind him, all the sheep are scattered. And the Apostle begs the shepherds to rule their flock, “not by lording it over the inheritance of God, but by setting an example to the flock.”

Persecution is inevitable for the church. We must go through the darkness, and at the same time not allow the light of Christ to be extinguished in our soul. “For it is time for judgment to begin at the house of God; but if it begins first with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the Gospel of God? And if the righteous are barely saved, then where will the wicked and sinful appear?”

The Lord once said: “This is the judgment, that light has come into the world, but people loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his deeds will not be exposed, because they are evil, but he who does righteousness comes to the light, so that his deeds may be revealed, because they are done in God" (John 3:19-21). So it turns out that those who rise to the light meet on their way a stream of those descending into darkness, and this stream tries to carry them along with it.

And how to stay in this flow, if going up is already more difficult than flying down? - But only like the poor widow, who, when everyone put into the church treasury “out of her abundance, but out of her poverty she put in everything she had.” What can stop her? Who can stop her? What can the enemy cling to in order to drag her into the abyss, when she placed all her hope in God, putting “all her food” into the treasury?

“So, let those who suffer according to the will of God betray their souls to Him, as to a faithful Creator, doing good.”
