105 years since the appearance of the Chelyabinsk landmark - Valeev's house

October 14 marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of one of the most famous attractions of the South Ural capital - the Trading House of the Bashkir merchant Mukhametkhan Valeev. This is one of the most remarkable buildings built in Chelyabinsk. The building, popularly nicknamed the Valeev House, is an architectural monument of the early twentieth century. The house, built in 1911, had its own electricity supply, plumbing, and heating; there was a store, a buffet and a photo salon, and many other amenities that people could only dream of at that time. At various times, the Trading House housed Tsentropechat, Gostipography, a textile syndicate, the Communal Workers' Club and a city department store. Time has shown that no matter what happens around, the Valeev Trading House has always remained the best of the best.

Today, only small notes and photographs in the city newspaper “Voice of the Urals,” published in pre-revolutionary Chelyabinsk, remind us of the private life of the merchant of the 1st guild M. Valeev.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (a city in the Far East) owes its appearance to the second Kamchatka expedition, led by the navigator Commander Vitus Bering. In the autumn of 1740, two postal and passenger ships: “St. Paul” and “St. Peter” went to the eastern coast of Kamchatka.

In a bay located on the territory of Avachinskaya Bay, the expedition decided to wait out the winter. So on October 17, the first settlement was founded. In fact, the entire difficult history of the capital of Kamchatka began with him.

Most car brands proudly bear the “names” of their creators, but with Cadillac the situation is different. The brand is named after the founder of Detroit, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac.

The main contribution to the creation of the car itself was made by talented inventors Henry Leland and Henry Ford, who founded the Cadillac Motor Car Company in the summer of 1902. And in the fall of October 17 of the same year, they designed the first Cadillac model “A”, the exhibition of which took place in 1903 in New York City.

The Medal "For Courage" - a state award - was established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1937. According to the decree, any soldier of the Red Army or Navy, as well as a defender of the state border of the USSR, could receive the medal for bravery and courage shown in battle with enemies.

From October 17, the cold becomes increasingly intense, and winter can be felt approaching. It was not worth going into the forest on this day - they said that on October 17, goblins break down trees and chase animals before leaving to spend the winter until next year.

In the church on October 17, the memory of the martyr Erofei (Ierotheus), who lived in Athens in the 1st century, is honored. He was converted to Christianity at the same time as Dionysius and became a disciple of the Apostle Paul. He was also consecrated to the rank of bishop - at that time Erofei was already a member of the Athenian Areopagus.

Tradition says that Erofei and Dionysius saw with their own eyes the burial of the Mother of God. As for the further fate of Erofey, he was killed by the pagans after he tried to preach Christianity among them.

On October 17, people prepared a special tincture, which was called erofeich. Usually they used various fragrant herbs for it. The traditional recipe included thyme, St. John's wort, sweet clover, wormwood, marjoram, yarrow, oregano, anise and mint.

The herbs were poured with vodka and infused for about 10-12 days in a warm and dark place. People said that this tincture not only increases appetite, but also helps in the treatment of a variety of ailments.

Usually on October 17, a large number of rituals related to scaring away evil spirits were performed. They believed that you could protect yourself from it by using onions, garlic, and radishes. In particular, bundles of onions and garlic were hung over the doors of houses and barns.
