Description of the icon

The painted icon “Addition of Mind” does not correspond to Orthodox traditions and canons of writing. It incorporated Catholic norms of icon painting. It depicts Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary, but not as a mother with a baby in her arms. They are woven together by liturgical vestments. There are crowns on the heads of the saints. The Mother of God and the Son of God are located near the entrance to the heavenly portal, under the arch of which the starry sky is visible. A veil or tunic hides the outer vestments of those standing on the icon of the Son and Mother. They are surrounded by angels and flickering lamps. At the bottom of the icon, under the feet of the Saints, there are small houses symbolizing Jerusalem.

Where is the icon

The original of the holy image adorned the Transfiguration Cathedral, located in the city of Rybinsk, but during the Soviet years, due to persecution and prohibitions on religion, the original was lost. Tradition is intertwined with history - the icon, revered since the 16th century in Rus', had its ancient prototype. Evangelist, doctor, one of the seventy disciples of Christ, assistant to the Apostle Paul (you probably heard the “Hymn of Love” by the Apostle Paul), the Evangelist Luke was also an icon painter. The authorship of the Apostle Luke belongs to several icons of the Mother of God, for example, Vladimir (in the Tretyakov Gallery). He, according to legend, created the statue of the Loretsk Icon of the Mother of God. The same prototype of the “Increase in Mind” icon. Loreto

The Loreto statue of the Mother of God is a statue with an impressive history that has absorbed thousands of years. According to legend, the Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary sailed to Italy from Nazareth as a result of the Crusades of the 13th century. The statue was located in the Holy House - where, as researchers have proven, the Mother of God spent her childhood and youth. Leaving Jerusalem, conquered by the Muslims, in 1297, the crusaders transported the Holy House to Dolmatia, and from there, in 1294, the Holy House, along with the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, traveled to the small port city of Ancopa, and then to Loreto. From then on, Loreto became a center of pilgrimages - in 1844, a Russian pilgrim, Archimandrite Porfiry, wrote down in his diary his impressions of visiting the Loreto Basilica: “A magnificent church was built on the very site of the wondrous event. As soon as you enter it, you will immediately see that sacred cave in which the Archangel announced to the Humble One about the incarnation of the Son of God in Her. This cave was inside the house and probably made up the lower floor of it, where the Mother of God was engaged in handicrafts and divine thoughts. It is remarkable that even today the Nazarene women work in the lower parts of the house, and only rest in the upper room at night. It is also remarkable that even now in some houses there are caves or, better, houses attached to caves. I saw one such house in passing in the upper part of the city. It’s no wonder that Joseph’s house was attached to a natural cave, where there was a workroom and a kitchen.”

Appearance in Rus'

In Rus', news of the Loretskaya icon appeared thanks to the mutual interest of the Orthodox and Catholic churches. The Russian prince Ivan III, who married Sophia Poleologos, acquired not only a wise wife, but also turned the eyes of the Western world on the Russian principality. The son of his father, Grand Duke Vasily III strove to the West, his contacts with the pope were established back in 1503, already in 1519 Vasily III was racking his brains about whether the Orthodox people of Rus' and the Catholic flock of Leo X should unite under the auspices of the Union of Florence. Opponents were primarily interested in creating a common “fund” of shrines of the East and West. In 1524, at the invitation of Pope Clement VII, who once again sought to extend his influence over the souls of the Russian principality, a Russian deputation went to Italy. An excursion to the Holy House in the city of Loreto was supposed to win over the adamant Orthodox delegation to the side of the pope. Crazy icon painter

In 1547, Moscow was engulfed in fires, and the icon “Addition of Mind” was painted from the image of Our Lady of Loreta “in the Moscow style.” Along with the facts of the appearance of the “Increase in Mind” icon is a legend. Reverence

Distinguishing the responsibilities of certain saints is not a new custom. To Panteleimon - for illnesses, to Spyridon of Trimifuntsky - for wealth.
